Recruit, Hire, and Retain Firefighters and Police Officers

Woodland is asking more of our first responders while response times are getting longer. Fire calls have nearly doubled since 2006, while firefighter staffing has declined by four positions. Police have also seen a rise in calls for service and in turn have had response times increase due to lack of available officers. Measure Y will add the staffing and resources needed to help our first responders respond faster when you need them most.

Replace and Update Aging Fleet and Equipment

Woodland’s fire apparatus fleet is aging, with the department’s fleet averaging 18 years old and frontline apparatus averaging 11–12 years. Aging equipment has led to more frequent repairs and increased time out of service, at times requiring Woodland to borrow or purchase engines from neighboring departments to maintain coverage. Measure Y would help address these challenges by supporting the replacement and maintenance of aging fire apparatus and equipment—helping ensure Woodland firefighters have reliable equipment ready when our community needs them most.

Recruit, Hire and Retain a Fire Service Fleet Mechanic

Because fire vehicles are specialized equipment, passage of Measure Y would allow the city to recruit and hire a fleet mechanic, who could be dedicated to working on fire vehicles and equipment, ensuring these vehicles stay on the road. Saving the taxpayers money by keeping this service in-house.

Improve Training & Competency for Firefighters and Police

Experience matters when lives are on the line. As seasoned personnel retire, we need to make sure their knowledge and experience are passed on to the next generation. Measure Y would add six firefighters, additional officers, and the training needed to build a stronger, more experienced workforce today and for the future.

How Do We Ensure Measure Y Funds Are Being Spent Appropriately?

Because Measure Y is a general tax, the ballot measure does not legally guarantee specific funding levels for fire or police. Woodland’s elected leaders have identified public safety as a priority for these revenues, and your Woodland firefighters are supporting Measure Y based in part on those commitments.
